BeyondHD

video technology

The digital video has been making advances and last year we saw a few 4K TV screens on the market. By the end of 2014 we now have most major TV manufacturers with a few 4K TV models. The 2014 world cup was captured digitally by SONY. The BBC in the UK transmitted 4K content to the their studios across the UK.

What is UltraHD ?  4K HD is a display which has 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is 4 times as many pixels as we had with HD (8.3 megapixels)

1080p is 1920×1080p

2,073,600 pixels.

2160p or 4K UHD is 3840×2160

8.3 megapixels in the 16:9 aspect ratio

The industry standard for 4K is 4096 x 2160 (at a 19:10 or 1.9:1 aspect ratio)

ROKU4 fullfills all you could need for a 4K streamer.
See my review below

4K video is available from a variety of sources. The most common at the moment is via youtube.

Another way to view 4K movies is to stream from Netflix, Amazon is also gearing up to offer 4k content.

Amazon Prime is also getting geared up to make 4K videos available to download. Beware this require a high speed broadband connection. Depending on the compression you will approx 25mbs to stream video content.

There is now a multitude of 4K TVs but not all of them will work with Netflix. Also you will need a about 15-30mbs to stream the content. The content would need far more bandwidth but with the help of some compression and decompression we can cut the size a great deal. Read about codecs.
Types of LCD Panels

In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels This technology was originally invented in 1996 by Hitachi.

IGZO Indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) is a semiconducting material, consisting of indium (In), gallium (Ga), zinc (Zn) and oxygen (O). "IGZO" was jointly developed for mass production by Sharp and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd. http://www.sharp-world.com/igzo/

TN
Twisted Nematic (TN) LCD panel TN Panels are cheap to produce and TN panels can change state quickly, giving them the very fast response time.  This makes the panels more appropriate for games that render fast image transitions.
With the demand for high quality video streaming we will need better broadband facilities. One of the ways this can be achieved is via fiber optics. 43 terabits per second over a single optical with just one laser transmitter has been achieves in tests. This will be a requirement if 8K TV will ever become the norm.

Using DLNA technology many devices can be connected together.

Almost all media gadgets can access the network over WiFi or Ethernet.

TVs, Computers, XBOX, PS4, ROKU4, DVD and Bluray players.

Tablets, Camera's, DVD and, Mobile phones, Photo frames,

NAS boxes, AV amplifiers, SMART Watches ….

The LG 27MU67 is a great 4K monitor. Has DHCP2.2 and HDMI2.0 @60Hrz

As you can image the SONY STR-DN860  is full of connectivity options. My main requirement was support for 4K video, including HDMI2.0 and HDCP2.2 which this unit provides
This unit also has Bluetooth, WiFi (5G) and LAN so it can be accessed from other rooms via mobiles and tablets etc.
OLED Organic Light-Emitting Diode Each organic cell (pixel) panel generates its own light source, so light doesn’t go acroos to the next cell, helping to create a great picture. No backlight is needed, and your display is even slimmer. This saves on power consumption as well. TVs monitors and laptops are now available using OLED technology.
What is a "Codec" "compressor/decompressor"   A codec is a piece of software that can compress and decompresses media files. Codec programs are required for your media player to play any media that is compressed. This also applies to many devices for example TV sets, DVD players, tablets and mobile phones that play compressed meia. The most commonly known CODEC is MP3. Without this compression media files can be very large.
VP9 is a video codec that can compress video files to half the size that the current encoding technology, called MPEG-4 or H.264, can achieve. More importantly, it will be used to compress video files and streams at 4K resolution, which is four times higher than HDTV resolution. VP9 is part of WebM, an open-source project sponsored by Google for creating technology for use with media on the Internet. Google has announced plans to use VP9 for 4K YouTube videos.
HEVC, is another codec for 4K TV.  High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC is a successor to the well known H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression standard. HEVC is said to double the data compression ratio compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC at the same level of video quality.   Windows10:  Microsoft will support the relatively new HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video compression standard in Windows 10 out of the box, according to a statement from Gabriel Aul, the leader of its Operating Systems Group's Data and Fundamentals Team.

XAVC

XAVC uses level 5.2 of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC which is the highest level supported by that video standard.

XAVC can record 4K resolution at 60 fps with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling at 600 Mbit/s.
